After that interesting experience, things started to brighten up. Caryn and I saw the movie, Letters To God. She got tickets from our youth minister since she couldn’t go. We had seen the preview to this movie when we went to go see Alice In Wonderland. We talked about how good it looked, and how we both should go see it. Well, surprisingly she got tickets, so we decided to go. We had to drive all the way out to Katy, TX (kind of a far drive). Well, we went to the theater and signed in for our church. One of the actors from the movie was there to talk about the film a little bit. I thought that was pretty cool. He gave us all this little packet with some goodies.

Well, the actual movie was amazing. It will make you cry. I admit my eyes did water up, and Caryn had makeup running down her face. Haha. It was a really good movie though. I’m not going to spoil it because it hasn’t come out in theaters yet. We, among other parishes, got to see a special pre-screening of it.

Just watch this trailer and you will see how good it looks.

I think everyone should go see it when it comes out on April 9th!

Today, was an interesting day. I went to class like usual. After class I met up with Caryn, Mikey, Brandon, and Mrs. J. We went to Kickapoo Ranch to check out the retreat center for the retreat we are having at the end of this month. When we were on our way back down 290, we saw this wreck on the side of the road. All we saw was a car that hit the side of a light pole. The car almost looked like it was starting to wrap around it. Also, there was some guy laying on top of the car. We were pretty sure that he was dead. Well, we decided to make a U-Turn and check it out again. Bad idea. We got stuck in traffic. They closed down the whole highway. About three Life Flight helicopters came. It was pretty serious. It was on the news and everything. We got out of the car and chilled for a bit. We talked to some other neighbor cars. Even one lady let her dog out of the car to run around a bit. It was an interesting time.

Well, I got this quick picture with my phone as we passed by the wreck again. There used to be top part to this car, but they cut the whole thing off.

Audition Performance

Today, I had my trombone audition for my admission into the Moores School of Music. I barley started to practice for my audition a week and a half in advance. One of the pieces I played, I barely got last Sunday. Well, I worked my butt off this past week and a half practicing everyday. In my free time, that’s pretty much all I did — practice. I feel like a better player, but I guess one would expect that from practicing so much. I prepared two solos: The first movement of Marcello’s Sonata In C Major and Guilmant’s Morceau Symphonique. Also, I prepared etude No. 26 from Rochut’s Melodious Etudes for Trombone. Along with the repertoire, I was supposed to know all twelve major and minor scales. I know my major scales, but only a few minor.

When I auditioned I walked into the room. It was a pretty big room, the size of an average band hall. There were about six judges. Most of them teach trombone, so it was very intimidating, very nerve wrecking. They had a microphone set up to record my audition. They told me to play a few notes to get a feel of what the room sounded like and then to play my prepared pieces. The room had a nice reverb, so I new my sound would carry well in there. I started off playing Marcello’s Sonata In C Major. After I played, I was a little less nervous, and I felt more confident in the way I played. Then, I played Guilmant’s Morceau Symphonique. I stumbled on a sixteenth-note run, but I was hitting all the high notes. After I played, they said they didn’t need to hear my third piece; it wasn’t necessary. They all seemed very pleased. By then I was sweating bullets like crazy. I was happy that they didn’t ask me to play any scales. They thanked me for playing, and I thanked them for listening. They mentioned Jersey Village High School, so I guess they still have a pretty good reputation. One of the judges told me to say hello to Mr. Kidwell for him. I’m hoping my relation with Jersey Village and Mr. Kidwell will help.

Overall, I’d say it was a good audition. I really think they liked my playing and my sound. I must admit the room helped. I am really hoping that I can get a scholarship for my playing. We’ll see though. I am supposed to find out if I made it into the school in a couple of weeks. I should be getting a letter in the mail.

Well, I am super happy to have gotten that over with. It’s quite a relief.

Meh, it was alright. I liked it but it wasn’t as good as I was expecting it to be. I thought JD’s role would be different than it actually was but it’s not the worst movie I’ve seen this year.

Your Name Here isn’t the song I had planned to end my playlist with. I had a lot of requests for it though, and I thought it would be fitting to close things out with one of the songs that people have asked me about the most.
I wrote this one as an acoustic song probably in the summer of 2001(I know! A long time ago. Some of you were probably in elementary school then.) As many of you might know, I was involved in a much talked about and much sung about feud with Jesse Lacey of Brand New around that time. The short version of the story is that we had been best friends for most of our lives, and then had a falling out over a girl that we both liked(I know! It’s ridiculous.) He wrote a song called 70x7 about it and Taking Back Sunday wrote a song about it called There’s No ‘I’ In Team. The two of us didn’t talk for almost a year after that, and then gradually we reconnected and became friends again.
Somewhere in the midst of the ridiculous drama of it all I was overwhelmed with the simple feeling of missing my friend. That was what led to me to write Your Name Here. The first verse was actually written to the listener, using “Your Name Here” in place of any direct reference to Jesse. The chorus was written to Jesse and it was sort of an invitation. The lyrics were actual directions to my apartment on Long Island at the time.They were fairly accurate, but had to be altered slightly for the purposes of rhyming and general lyrical flow. It was Carman’s road that I lived off of. You also had to take the first right after the the first stoplight, there was no traffic light on my corner. I figured I’d be specific about that since I’ve talked to a few people from Long Island that actually tried to follow the directions with frustrating results.
The song didn’t see the light of day for years because it wouldn’t have made it as a Taking Back Sunday song, and when Straylight Run started out I had a whole batch of much newer songs that I was really excited about. Your Name Here had already been on the shelf for quite a while even then. I think it was one of the first songs we worked on after releasing our first five song EP online.
So, as I said, this will be the last song of my Straylight playlist. If any of you have these songs I would recommend actually putting this playlist together and checking it out. I posted the songs in an order that I think flows well and makes for good listening. If you don’t own the songs and you want to check them out you can listen to it on Straylight Run’s myspace page. http://www.myspace.com/straylightrun I could only fit 10 songs on our player though, so it’s missing one.
It’s been great for me to post these songs and reminisce. Thanks to all of you who wrote to tell me how much you enjoyed it. I wish this was something I could keep doing, but the longer I continue it the further it will get from my original intention. I wanted to make a list of some of my favorite Straylight Run songs and memories to say goodbye to the band in a positive way and right now I feel like that has been accomplished. I also want to thank all of you who have stuck with Straylight Run through so many years and so many changes. It’s an amazing thing to have been able to develop the kind of relationship I have with all of you. I appreciate your love and support so much more than I can say.
