I Don’t Want This Anymore

This song is memorable for me because of the way it was written and because it was such a different kind of song for Straylight Run to record. MIchelle wrote the melody and lyrics a cappella. I recorded her vocals to a click track and then I brought in a drum beat that I had made beforehand. After that I wrote some music around her melody. The music wasn’t based on a chord progression, just me layering different guitar melodies around her vocal part. Shaun then added a really sweet bass line on his fret-less bass and Isaac(who I mentioned in my First Of The Century blog) layered some guitar parts over the ending. I think a lot of people assumed this song was done with keyboards and synth sounds, but most everything is actually guitar. It was a really interesting way to put a song together. We never did anything like that before or after. Now that I think of it I kind of wish we had.
I don’t really know what sparked the idea, but we decided to keep the music going at the end and go into the vocal room to add some talking in the background. We had to think of things to talk about on the spot and one of those things ended up being how I wasn’t there when they first started recording the conversation. If you listen closely towards the end you can hear Isaac joking with me about how he had told everyone I was “probably off doing something stupid” which was pretty funny at the time for some reason.
One last little semi interesting bit of info: The sound of the door closing at the end of the song was a little shout out to Brand New. They had recorded the song Play Crack The Sky in the same room and ended it with the sound of that same door closing.
